OQHRA Annual Election of Directors

NEW BOARD MEMBERS APPOINTED:  The  unexpired terms of Rick Sumner and Eddie Willis were filled at the August board meeting.  Tim Tall Chief (an owner from Jones, Oklahoma) and Dr.James Bailey DVM (a breeder from Purcell, OK) were approved by the board to fill those terms until the end of 2019.

ANNUAL OQHRA ELECTION:  The annual OQHRA is about to be underway.  The record date for membership and voting eligibility is SEPTEMBER 1, 2018 so if you want to participate in the election you need to make sure your membership is current.  A member is eligible to vote if they are an annual ($25) or lifetime ($200) member or if they started a horse during the 2017 Fall race meeting at Will Rogers Downs, or the 2018 Remington Park or Fair Meadows meet earlier this year  and did not opt to be excluded from representation by OQHRA during those meets.

There are six director positions for Oklahoma residents and one position for an out of state resident. You must be a member to be elected.

If you are interested in running for a position on the board you can be considered for nomination in two ways.

1.  send a request in writing (text, email, or regular mail) to have your name included on the nomination ballot. Your request must be received by September 1.

2.  you many get write in votes on the nomination ballot sufficient to be one of the 10 individuals from the nomination voting that your name can appear on the election ballot.

The process is two sessions of voting.... first you will receive a nomination ballot in the mail in mid September.  This is to nominate individuals to appear on the election ballot.  The ten individuals with the highest number of votes will be eligible to have their names and biographies on the actual election ballot that will go in the mail in mid-October.  All voting is tabulated by an accounting firm, do not send your ballots back to OQHRA.

RECENT ACTION BY OQHRA BOARD:    Remington Park and the OQHRA have agreed to a new condition of participation at the Remington Park Quarter Horse meet in the spring of 2019.  While the details are still being worked out, no horse will be allowed to enter any race (overnight, stake, futurity trials, or derby trials) unless they have participated in a pre-race HAIR testing program to screen for prohibited drugs.  Hair samples will be collected under the supervision of a veterinarian at the owners expense and will be submitted for hair testing.  The results of a clean hair test will be required before any horse is eligible to enter and run in a race for the first time at the track during the entire meet.  The cost of the testing will be reimbursed to the owners in the form of a participation purse after the horse successfully enters and races in it's first overnight race during the meet.  Watch for more detail on this requirement but the intent of this program is to provide every owner an assurance that all participants at the meet are running on a level playing field with regard to detectable prohibited drugs.

ACTION TAKEN AT AUGUST OHRC MEETING:  2019 racing and gaming licenses were tentatively approved for all three Oklahoma tracks.  Formal approval of dates will come at the October meeting.  Will Rogers Downs originally requested a reduction in days and number of races for the 2019 fall QH meet, but withdrew that request before today's meeting and will revise their application to reflect the statutory number of races for each breed as required for them to offer gaming.  The commission also opened the rule making process for possible revisions to rules for:  Powers and duties of Commission; Entries and Declarations; Prohibited Practices and Equine testing; and Oklahoma Bred Program.  The proposed changes were not disclosed at the meeting.

NEXT OQHRA BOARD MEETING:  The next OQHRA board meeting will be October 16 at noon at Heritage Place.

REMINDERS: The Will Rogers Downs condition books are now available.  First entry day is Tuesday September 4th for 350 Yard Black Gold Futurity trials. The trials will run on September 8th which is the first day of the fall meet.

OQHRA offices will be short staffed the week of August 27, and will be closed on September 3rd for Labor Day.

Our office will be  happy to verify the current status of your membership.  Don't miss the September 1 deadline!!
